Privacy Policy

Milebound is built to keep your places on your phone. Here's the plain-language version of how that works.

Effective June 18, 2026 · Last updated June 29, 2026
In short: The Milebound app has no account and no servers of ours — your circles, pins, and history stay on your iPhone, or, if you turn on iCloud Backup, in your own private iCloud. Your location powers alerts and distances on your device; searching for places sends your query to map providers to return results. This website (milebound.app) uses Google Analytics to understand visits. We don't sell your data.

1. Who this policy covers

This Privacy Policy explains how Milebound (“we,” “us,” or “our”) handles information across two things that work very differently: the Milebound iOS app and the milebound.app website. We call out which is which throughout. Milebound is operated by its developer, Daniel Ordonez. You can reach us anytime at support@milebound.app.

2. The app: your data stays on your device

The Milebound app has no account, no login, and no servers of our own. Everything you create — your circles (center points and radii), pins, alert settings, and your crossing and event log — is stored locally on your iPhone. The distance and boundary calculations run entirely on your device. We do not collect, receive, transmit, sell, or rent this data.

If you turn on iCloud Backup (see section 8), a copy is also saved to your own private iCloud — still never to us.

Because there is no sign-in, the app does not collect your name, email, or any profile.

3. Location data (app)

Milebound uses your device location to measure your distance to the circles you create and to alert you when you cross or approach a boundary. To do this reliably while the app is closed, it asks for “Always” location access; you can also use it with “While Using” access, with reduced background reliability.

Your location is processed on your device only. It is never sent to us or to any third party. You can change or revoke location access at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services.

4. Other device permissions (app)

  • Notifications — alerts are generated locally on your device. No notification content passes through our servers (we have none).
  • Calendar (optional) — if you turn on Calendar Sync, Milebound adds an event to a calendar you choose when you cross a boundary. It uses write-only access and never reads your calendar.
  • Microphone & speech recognition (optional) — if you dictate a search instead of typing, Apple's speech-recognition service converts your speech to text. That audio is handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy; we do not receive or store it.

5. Place search (app)

Place search and maps use Apple's Maps/MapKit frameworks. When you search, your search terms are handled by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy. To fill category results (the Zones feature — fuel, rest stops, medical, and more), the app also queries OpenStreetMap, the HERE API through our milebound.app proxy, and Open Charge Map, sending the map area being searched to fetch nearby places. Our proxy passes the request to HERE and keeps only short-lived counts used to limit abuse; it does not store your searches. Place details may also show weather from Apple's WeatherKit, which receives the place's coordinates. Beyond the recent-searches list kept on your device, we do not store your searches. The app contains no third-party advertising or cross-app tracking SDKs.

6. The website: analytics & cookies

This website (milebound.app) uses Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the site — for example, pages viewed, approximate region, device and browser type, and referring links. Google Analytics sets cookies and may process your IP address and usage data on our behalf; see Google's Privacy Policy. We use this only in aggregate to improve the site — not to identify you.

You can opt out using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, by blocking cookies in your browser, or by using a privacy-focused browser. Our web host (Hostinger) also keeps standard server logs (such as IP address and request times) for security and reliability.

7. Purchases (planned)

Milebound plans to offer an optional paid upgrade (Milebound Pro) through Apple's In-App Purchase. If you buy it, Apple processes the payment — we never receive your card number or full payment details. Apple may share limited, non-identifying transaction information with us. See Apple's Privacy Policy for how Apple handles purchases.

8. How your data is stored and retained

App data lives on your iPhone for as long as you keep it. You can export your event log to CSV and your places to JSON, and you can delete everything from within the app at any time. Deleting the app removes the data stored on your device.

iCloud Backup (optional, part of Milebound Pro) — when you turn it on, a copy of your places, activity log, the set of places you monitor, recent searches, and travel mode is saved to your own private iCloud (Apple’s iCloud/CloudKit), tied to your Apple Account. Apple stores it under Apple’s Privacy Policy; we have no access to it, and it never passes through any server of ours. Your device-only monitoring state (the inside/outside baselines) is not backed up. You can turn iCloud Backup off at any time in the app, and removing the backup is done through your own iCloud.

Diagnostics (optional, off by default) — if you turn on Diagnostics in Settings, the app keeps a local log of recent location fixes to help troubleshoot tracking issues. It stays on your device and is included only if you choose to export and share a diagnostic report. You can clear it anytime in the app.

9. Who we share information with

We do not sell your personal information. The only third parties involved are the service providers above, each acting under their own terms: Apple (maps, search, speech recognition, payments, the App Store, weather, and — only if you enable it — iCloud Backup), the map-data providers used for place and category search (OpenStreetMap, HERE, and Open Charge Map), Google (website analytics), and Hostinger (website hosting). We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect our rights.

10. Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the EU/UK GDPR or the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA) — including the right to access, correct, delete, or port your data, and to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information (we do neither). Because the app keeps your data on your own device, you can exercise most of these directly: export or delete your data in the app, and manage permissions in iOS Settings. For website-analytics data or any other request, email us at support@milebound.app and we will respond as required by applicable law. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

11. Data security

App data is protected by your device's own security (passcode, Face ID/Touch ID, and iOS encryption). If you enable iCloud Backup, that copy is protected by your iCloud account and Apple's encryption. The website is served over HTTPS. No method of storage or transmission is 100% secure, but because the app keeps your data on your device (or your own iCloud) and we run no user database, there is very little for anyone else to access.

12. Children's privacy

Milebound is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will address it.

13. International users

Milebound is offered from the United States. If you use the website from outside the U.S., analytics data may be processed in the U.S. by Google under appropriate safeguards. The app itself keeps your data on your device wherever you are.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Milebound evolves. We will post the current version here with a new “last updated” date, and for material changes we will make the update prominent.
